Gettysburg Address
Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.

改革開放以來,我國的英語教育規(guī)模不斷擴大,教育教學取得了顯著成就。然而受應試教育的影響,學校教育仍普遍存在重考試成績輕口語交際能力的現象。為適應新課程改革提出的“從生活經驗和認知水平出發(fā),發(fā)展學生的綜合語言運用能力,使語言學習的過程成為學生形成積極的情感態(tài)度、主動思維和大膽實踐、提高跨文化意識和形成自主學習能力的過程”要求[1],我校多年來在英語教育教學過程中組織學生積極參與各種形式的課外實踐活動,提高學生的英語綜合運用能力。筆者主要談談自己所在學校在創(chuàng)建外語特色學校的過程中,為提高中學生英語口語交際能力而開展的一系列課外活動,以及這些活動的活動所產生的影響。
一、提高中學生英語口語交際能力的課外活動研究的背景
筆者所在的學校自創(chuàng)辦以來就非常注重英語特色學校的建設,一方面是為了適應課程改革的需要,另一方面是為了不斷積累英語特色辦學的經驗。在十多年的實踐過程中,我們不斷嘗試各種有效的活動方式體現辦學特色。尤其在課外實踐活動中,我校和社會各方面密切合作,開展多種多樣的活動,培養(yǎng)學生的聽、說、讀、寫能力。在眾多的課外實踐活動中,學生最感興趣的就是提高英語口語交際能力的活動。自2011年7月我校開始籌備到進入研究江蘇省教育科學“十二五”規(guī)劃課題的“外語特色學校創(chuàng)建中的英語教學輔助活動研究”以來,我們對能提高中學生口語交際能力的幾個行之有效的課外活動進行了長期的跟蹤研究。
二、提高中學生英語口語交際能力的主要課外活動的選擇
根據近年來,學校的課堂教育中仍然存在只注重學生英語知識的輸入而忽視學生英語能力輸出的傳統(tǒng)頑癥,我們在課外活動的選擇上更注重以提高學生英語口語交際能力為主的活動,同時顧及時間和場地的利用,學校、家庭及社會有關機構的合作等。所以我們選取的活動形式時主要從三個方面考慮:一是便于學校和家庭,以及社會合作機構的操作,二是既聯系學生生活又促進學習,三是成為學生人生成長中的寶貴經歷。我們選定兩種主要的形式作為研究對象:一是英語演講,二是涉外交流。
英語演講最能體現學生的英語水平和口語交際能力,因此英語演講是提高學生口語水平的新途徑[2]。進入21世紀,隨著國際間交往的日益頻繁,高水準的口頭表達能力和演講能力成為人們在生存和競爭中制勝的“法寶”和“殺手锏”,較高水平的口頭表達和交流能力是現代社會對人才的一項基本且重要的要求[3]。所以我們通過組織學生積極主動參與校內外各種英語演講比賽,促進學生主動加強聽力能力和口頭表達能力的訓練,鼓勵學生大膽擺脫“啞巴”英語,努力學習“有聲”英語,提高英語口語交際能力。
涉外交流是我們在特色辦學過程中不斷發(fā)展起來的一種有效的、影響更廣的課外活動形式。涉外就是和外國人有交流,學英語的最終目的就是用英語,在我國長期的英語教學過程中,中國學生幾乎沒有和外國人交流的經驗。隨著經濟全球化步伐的進一步加快,國際的跨文化交際日益頻繁,單純學習語言知識而不了解中西方文化的差異,無法達到有效交際的目的[4]。我們通過涉外交流活動,把外國專家、學者、學生、社團請進來,派遣我校老師、學生走進外國大學、中學、家庭體驗外國文化,增強學生的跨文化意識,提高學生的口語交際能力。
三、提高中學生英語口語交際能力的課外活動的具體實踐
經過多年的實踐,我們已經固定下來并一直在實行的演講活動有:校內演講、校外演講。涉外交流合作形式有:和英美中學結締友好合作學校、訪問英美文化夏令營、邀請英美學者來校講學、邀請外國留學生舉行英語座談。
(一)英語演講比賽活動具體實踐。
1.舉辦英語演講指導講座。首先,通過學校英語俱樂部,組織主動積極參與英語演講活動的學生在學校禮堂收看英語演講視頻,如《21世紀全國中學生英語演講視頻》、《CCTV希望之星英語風采大賽》等,讓學生在觀看全國中學生演講比賽視頻的過程中產生參與英語演講的熱情。然后,學校教務處安排老師做專題講座,從演講稿的選題立意、論據收集、謀篇布局、措辭運用、語言修改、演講道具到英語演講中的語音語調、音高、語速、停頓、重音、聲音的抑揚頓挫及節(jié)奏感的把握,再到面部表情、眼神、手勢等技巧的運用及情感控制等方面進行詳細的指導。
2.舉辦校內演講比賽。每學期在學校內舉行一次主題演講比賽。學校教務處英語教科室結合學生的實際選定主題,如my home,school life,my problems等,給學生一周的時間,由英語老師指導修改演講,在班級進行預備演講和篩選,最終確定參與學校比賽的學生名單,一個班級一個名額。在全校演講比賽的日子,全體師生共同參與,共同欣賞學生的精彩演講。學校根據比賽成績表彰獎勵演講優(yōu)秀的學生。
3.組織校外演講比賽。我校近年來與中國日報社“21世紀杯”全國中小學生演講比賽江蘇組委會合作,組織學生參加“21世紀杯”全國中小學生演講比賽。學校在每年10月份接到比賽組委會演講主題通知后,布置各英語老師在班上進行宣傳,鼓勵同學積極報名,自愿參與,并對本班同學的演講稿認真篩選,確定本班參賽人員名單。教科室再統(tǒng)計全校參賽人數并進行核對,將參賽人的名單、聯系方式、指導老師等資料統(tǒng)一打包上交大賽組委會。教師組織這些學生每周集中培訓一次,不斷提高演講口語表達能力。每年我校有數十名學生進入復賽和數名同學進入江蘇省決賽。
(二)涉外交流活動的具體實踐。
根據交往的形式,我們將涉外交流活動分為單向型和雙向型。單向型主要是由我校組織學生前往英美國家的文化單位學習,了解西方國家的文化?;蚪邮苡⒚绹矣押脤W?;蚱渌麍F體來我校訪問,傳遞我們的文化。雙向型主要是我校和英美友好學校建立互助關系,互派學生交流學習。
1.單向型涉外交流的具體實踐。
主要形式是夏令營這是提高學生口語交際能力的主要涉外交流活動之一。每年暑假學校組織學生到英國和美國進行學習交流活動。學生居住在英國或美國家庭中,和家庭主人共同生活兩周時間,在這兩周的時間里,學生還走入社會,和當地居民交流,走訪當地學校和文化單位,學習英美文化。通過夏令營的實踐活動,學生的口語交際能力大大提高。
另外,邀請在國內的外籍學生和老師到本校和學生舉行交流聚會。如2013年1月10日下午,美國伊利諾伊大學厄本納-香檳分校師生一行18人來我校訪問交流。在每學期兩次的聚會中,學生大膽開口,嘗試用英語表達自己的想法,學會了和外國友人交流。
2.雙向型涉外交流的具體實踐。
雙向型的涉外交流活動主要是和聯誼學校合作,互派交換學生。這是一種長期而有效的提高學生口語交際能力的方式。2012年10月18日,我校與美國North Cross學校締結成友好學校。雙方都安排學生到對方學校學習,為不斷提高學生的口語交流能力創(chuàng)造良好的外部條件。返回學校后的外派學生又促進本校同學的英語口語交流能力。當然這樣的活動不僅需要學校專項研究經費的支持,還需要本地經濟實體的大力支持。
四、提高中學生英語口語交際能力的課外活動的積極影響
有效組織英語演講和涉外交流活動,有助于充分發(fā)揮每個學生的潛能,培養(yǎng)學生的創(chuàng)新精神和實踐能力,促進學生個性的健康發(fā)展,完善學生的綜合素質,提高學生實際語言運用能力。所以這兩種形式的課外活動主要有以下積極影響:
(一)對提高學生口語交際能力起到了明顯的促進作用。在演講比賽活動中,學生為了展示自己的口語表達能力,加強訓練,不斷模仿和強化地道的英語口語表達習慣。通過視頻觀看,班級模擬練習,以及參賽者的集中訓練,提高了學生的語境適應能力,調動了學生練習口語的積極性,同時增強了開口用英語表達的自信心。在跨文化交流活動中,學生表現得更為好奇和積極。為了能將自己所學的在英語環(huán)境中表達出來,和地道的英美人士進行實地交流,學生更加注意培養(yǎng)自己的語言表達能力。在現實交流中學生會碰到語言交流中的差異,在發(fā)現差異和適應差異的過程中學生不斷地修正自己的表達,從而提高自身的口語交際能力。通過參加這些活動,學生更加認識到提高英語口語交際能力的重要性。
(二)通過舉辦這些活動,促進了學生自身全面發(fā)展,符合課程標準的要求。英語演講和涉外交流活動為學生提供展示自我、挑戰(zhàn)自我的平臺,創(chuàng)造互相交流和學習的機會。學生在英語演講活動和涉外交流活動準備階段,通過搜集整理有關資料,擴大知識面,培養(yǎng)自主學習能力;在英語演講和涉外交流活動進行中,通過大膽開口、積極思維,提高心理素質,發(fā)展批判性思維習慣的形成,以及批判性思維能力[5],為學生終身發(fā)展積累一定的寶貴經驗。
(三)通過組織這些活動,促進了校園文化的建設。英語演講和涉外交流活動是外語特色學校創(chuàng)辦過程中所實施的課外教學輔助活動的一部分,學生積極參與這些活動,為學校營造濃郁的英語文化氛圍,展示蓬勃向上的精神風貌,凸顯外語特色學校的特色,促進我校相關課題研究的順利進行。同時在組織這些活動中,英語教師隊伍整體專業(yè)素質得到了提高,為學校的可持續(xù)發(fā)展創(chuàng)造了良好的外部環(huán)境。
總之,在英語特色學校創(chuàng)辦過程中,通過組織演講比賽和涉外交流等課外活動,在激發(fā)學生的學習興趣和提高學生的口語交際能力方面的確起到了積極的促進作用。教師和學生在這些活動中所都出的努力也有了很大收獲,但是在今后的學校發(fā)展過程中,為了更好地適應課程改革的需要,還要不斷優(yōu)化此類活動的開展,讓更多的學生參與其中,為學生提供更多實踐舞臺,為以后跨文化交流打下基礎;為教師提供專業(yè)提升機會,為教師拓寬教學視野;為學校的可持續(xù)發(fā)展開辟更加寬廣的道路,促進中西方學校相互間的交流與溝通。
